The Grapple is the Best Video Game Invention in Forever.

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Games have certainly come a long way, haven’t they? I can remember when I’d spend a quiet night with friends, playing a good natured game of Halo. This week, I spent a few hours playing Saint’s Row 2, where I got digitally wasted, derailed an elevated train, and then had to mercy-kill one of my own gang members (Carlos) after he’d been dragged behind a truck for several miles. Games these days are tying morality into the storyline and the stories really hit home because you become so wrapped up in your characters. I mean, when you’re not robbing people and going on a chainsaw rampage through a strip club. It’s like playing an opera.

What happened to the pure unadulterated fun? The novelty of playing with a physics engine? Where’s the joy in killing these days? Well, it’s still around, and it’s name is “the grapple”, brought to us courtesy of Just Cause 2.

I’m sure that Just Cause 2 has a great storyline and everything, but who cares? I just want to grapple a bad guy to a moving vehicle and watch him get dragged off into the sunset.
